Development Programs
The San
Joaquin Valley Writing Project is a professional community that provides
intellectual challenges, offers professional opportunities, and expects teachers
to participate in a career-long growth and achievement. Successful teachers in
all fields can be identified and brought together yearly in an expanding pool of
teacher leaders. This process has created an energy and enthusiasm among
teachers that has make it possible, as never before, for teachers to be
recognized as leaders and expert professionals. It is a self-perpetuating
process that can change and improve teaching and learning in our classrooms in
the Central Valley of California and across the county.
Like all National Writing Project sites, the SJVWP has four components:
1. INVITATIONAL INSTITUTES
Teachers at kindergarten through college levels with expertise and experience teaching writing apply to participate in invitational institutes which are held each summer at CSUF. At these institutes, teachers demonstrate best practices that are tied to The Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools, read and discuss research, write, and respond to other Fellow's writing.2. CONTINUITY PROGRAMS
Unlike other programs for teachers that end when the summer program comes to a close, Teacher Consultants continue to participate in a variety of professional development programs. They can participate in study groups, attend reunion meetings, work on special projects, and more.3. STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
The SJVWP conducts staff development programs at school sites, county offices of education, and at California State University, Fresno to provide training in writing instruction and share the best teaching practices that will improve student writing. Staff development programs are tied to the standards listed in the Framework. Staff development programs are held during the school year and during the summer. Administrators can contact the SJVWP to arrange for a program at their school.4. PARTNERSHIPS
The SJVWP enters into partnerships with low achieving school to work with teachers for a year or longer to provide intense training and intervention programs. A Teacher Consultant at the school serves as leader for the intensive program. The SJVWP enters into partnerships with schools that have already participated in staff development programs and have at least one Teacher Consultant on staff.
